Punta Gorda, Florida, lies on the south bank of the tidal Peace River and the eastern shore of Charlotte Harbor. Punta Gorda means ‘fat point’. It is a perfect description of this small town with a population of 16,641, which protrudes out into the water where Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River meet. In addition to its beautifully restored historic district, Punta Gorda offers many natural attractions, waterside shopping and leisurely strolls along the Harborwalk. Easily reached by I-75 along Florida’s south-central Gulf Coast, Punta Gorda features streets lined with huge royal palms, old Florida-era tin-roofed homes with wide verandas, brick lanes, and street lamps and benches that leave an almost tangible old-Florida atmosphere.
Less than ten years after the first settlements in the area, railroads rolled into the town in June 1886, and with them came the first land developers and Southwest Florida’s first batch of tourists. Punta Gorda became the southernmost stop on the Florida Southern Railroad until an extension was built to Fort Myers in 1904, attracting the industries that propelled its initial growth.
Punta Gorda is the county seat of Charlotte County and the only incorporated municipality in the county. The area preserves the city’s past while showcasing newer facilities. Laishley Park Municipal Marina, Linear Park and various trails were created throughout the city for bicycle and pedestrian traffic. The A.C. Freeman House Museum is an authentically restored and furnished late Victorian-era home. Near the historic district of Punta Gorda, you will find Fishermen’s Village. This unique waterfront destination includes gift, clothing, and specialty shops, seven restaurants, a military heritage museum, a 98-slip marina and fully furnished luxury villas.
